01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Porsche Carrera GTZ is a bespoke reinterpretation of the Porsche Carrera GT commissioned in 2013 by Dutch Porsche collector Hans Berg and executed by Zagato. The project follows the classical coachbuilding tradition prevalent from the 1940s to the 1960s, when individual clients commissioned specialized bodywork for competition use or concours d’elegance participation, while retaining a manufacturer’s mechanical platform. The Carrera GTZ is based on the standard Porsche Carrera GT, preserving its carbon-fiber monocoque chassis, pushrod suspension, and rear-mid-mounted naturally aspirated 5.7-litre V10 engine. The drivetrain remains unchanged, delivering approximately 612 hp through a six-speed manual transmission, with performance figures comparable to the original model. Zagato’s intervention focused exclusively on the bodywork and aerodynamic treatment rather than mechanical alteration. The most significant changes are concentrated at the rear, where Zagato developed a new engine cover and tail section inspired by its historical Porsche-bodied coupes, particularly those derived from the 356 Carrera. The revised silhouette adopts a smoother, more cohesive fastback profile, reducing visual mass while emphasizing longitudinal flow. New rear bumpers, a reshaped diffuser, and reconfigured exhaust outlets were developed to integrate with the altered body geometry. The roofline was subtly modified to reinforce the coupe-like character associated with Zagato’s design language. Additional changes include bespoke panels, refined aerodynamic detailing, and carefully recalibrated surface transitions intended to improve airflow management without disrupting the Carrera GT’s original proportions. The front section remained largely intact to preserve Porsche’s design identity and homologation constraints. The Carrera GTZ was first presented publicly at events including the Mille Miglia, where it attracted attention from collectors and Carrera GT owners. Although originally envisaged as a limited run of nine units, production remained extremely restricted, with six examples completed. Each car was individually finished, reinforcing the bespoke nature of the project.
