01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Isotta Fraschini Tipo 8A, completed in 1925 with coachwork by Carrozzeria Zagato, represents an early application of lightweight, performance-oriented coachbuilding to one of the most prestigious luxury chassis of the interwar period. Introduced in 1924, the Tipo 8A was Isotta Fraschini’s flagship model and was supplied exclusively as a rolling chassis to be bodied according to individual client specifications. The Tipo 8A chassis was powered by a 7,370 cc inline eight-cylinder engine with overhead valves and an aluminium crankcase. The engine was designed for smoothness, elasticity, and sustained cruising rather than outright speed, producing approximately 115 horsepower in early configurations. Power was transmitted through a three-speed manual gearbox to a live rear axle. The chassis incorporated servo-assisted mechanical drum brakes on all four wheels, semi-elliptic leaf springs front and rear, and a long wheelbase suitable for a wide range of bespoke bodies. Suspension tuning prioritized ride comfort and stability on long-distance travel. Zagato’s interpretation of the Tipo 8A differed markedly from the formal saloons and landaulets commonly associated with the marque. The coachwork emphasized reduced mass, compact proportions, and streamlined forms, consistent with Zagato’s early focus on competition-derived principles. Construction employed hand-formed aluminium panels over a wooden frame, following contemporary lightweight practices prior to the later introduction of tubular construction methods. Ornamentation was restrained, with surface treatment favoring continuity and functional clarity over decorative excess. The body proportions typically featured a long bonnet and a more compact passenger compartment set rearward, giving the car a dynamic stance unusual for a chassis of this size. Interior execution was simpler than that of formal luxury bodies, reflecting Zagato’s emphasis on weight reduction and driving efficiency while maintaining adequate comfort for high-end clientele.
