01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Fiat 8V Elaborata Zagato was born out of Fiat’s ambitious attempt to enter the world of high-performance sports cars. Originally, the company planned to produce 200 examples of the 8V (or “Otto Vu”) for homologation purposes, but only 114 chassis were ultimately built between 1952 and 1954. To generate excitement around the model, Fiat sent rolling chassis to some of Italy’s most prestigious coachbuilders, including Carrozzeria Zagato, renowned for its lightweight and aerodynamically advanced designs. Zagato received 32 8V chassis, five of which already bore Fiat-designed bodywork. Instead of completely redesigning them, Zagato enhanced these cars with modifications aimed at improving both performance and aesthetics—earning them the designation 8V Elaborata Zagato. These models quickly became some of the most sought-after, not only for their striking craftsmanship but also for their success in motorsports. They were among the first cars to feature the now-iconic Zagato double-bubble roof, a distinctive design element that increased structural rigidity while providing additional headroom for helmeted racing drivers. In addition to these five elaborated examples, Zagato created a single Spyder on one of the 8V chassis, a rare open-top interpretation of the model. The remaining 27 chassis were fitted with entirely new lightweight aluminum coupe bodies, known as the 8VZ. Each was meticulously hand-built to customer specifications, making every Zagato-bodied 8V Berlinetta unique, with subtle design variations from one car to another. Among these, only five coupes featured the signature double-bubble roof, making them especially rare and desirable among collectors. Though limited in production, the Fiat 8V Zagato proved itself in competition, excelling in endurance races and hill climbs across Europe. Its advanced aerodynamics, featherweight construction, and distinctive styling solidified its place as one of Fiat’s most legendary sports cars—a true masterpiece of Italian automotive design.
