01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Fiat 1100 MM Zagato Aerodinamica II was a competition special bodied by Zagato on Fiat 1100 mechanicals. It belonged to the small group of pre-war Italian sports cars developed around the idea of reducing drag, rather than simply increasing engine power. The name MM referred to the Mille Miglia, the type of fast road race for which lightweight and aerodynamic bodies could offer a real advantage. The car used the compact Fiat 1100 platform as its basis, but Zagato completely transformed its appearance. The body was low, narrow and highly streamlined, with separate but carefully faired front wings, a small upright grille, exposed front wheels and a long tapering tail. The rear wheels were partially enclosed by large aerodynamic spats, while the back of the car ended in a rounded, almost teardrop-shaped form. This solution was intended to smooth airflow and improve stability at speed. The cockpit was very small and open, with a cut-down windscreen and minimal protection for the driver and passenger. The doors were low and light, and the whole body was shaped with function in mind. The side profile shows the logic of the design clearly: a rounded nose, a compact central cockpit and a long descending rear section. It was not decorative coachbuilding; it was a practical racing body built around weight saving and air penetration. Mechanically, the car retained Fiat 1100 components, which made it smaller and less powerful than the larger sports cars of the period. For this reason, Zagato’s lightweight construction and aerodynamic work were essential. The aim was to make the most of modest displacement by reducing resistance and mass. The Aerodinamica II is significant because it shows Zagato’s early interest in aerodynamic competition bodies, a direction that would become central to the company’s postwar identity. Long before the famous double-bubble coupés and lightweight GT cars, Zagato was already experimenting with compact proportions, reduced frontal area and efficient body shapes. The Fiat 1100 MM Zagato Aerodinamica II is therefore an important step in the development of Italian aerodynamic sports-car design.
