01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Fiat 1500 MM Zagato Aerodinamica I was an aerodynamic competition spider built by Zagato on Fiat 1500 mechanicals. It belonged to the same experimental line as the later Fiat 1100 MM Zagato Aerodinamica II, but used the larger Fiat 1500 base and a more powerful engine, giving Zagato a broader platform for its early aerodynamic ideas. The car was conceived for road racing, where reduced weight and improved air penetration were essential. The MM designation referred to the Mille Miglia, the type of long-distance competition in which small, efficient sports cars could compete effectively against larger and more powerful machines. Zagato’s work focused on extracting speed through light construction and a streamlined body rather than relying only on engine output. The body was low, smooth and compact, with a long bonnet, separate front wings, a narrow vertical grille and exposed headlamps. The front fenders were shaped to guide airflow around the wheels, while the rear section was long and rounded, ending in a tapered tail. The rear wheels were enclosed by large spats, a typical aerodynamic solution of the period. The open cockpit was minimal, with a low windscreen, simple doors and little unnecessary trim. Compared with the later Aerodinamica II, the Aerodinamica I appears more muscular and less extreme in its proportions. The front end is more upright, the wings are more pronounced, and the car still keeps a strong pre-war sports-racer character. At the same time, its enclosed rear wheels and flowing tail already show the direction Zagato would continue to explore in later lightweight competition bodies. Mechanically, the car retained Fiat 1500 components, making it a relatively modest-displacement sports car by international standards. For this reason, Zagato’s aluminium bodywork and aerodynamic treatment were central to its purpose. The result was a small Italian racing spider designed to be light, efficient and fast over long distances. The Fiat 1500 MM Zagato Aerodinamica I is important because it shows Zagato experimenting with aerodynamic racing forms before the postwar GT era. It connects the practical engineering of Fiat production cars with the coachbuilder’s growing interest in lightweight, wind-cheating competition bodies.
