01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Daniela 750 Sport Testadoro was a limited-production racing automobile developed in 1949 by Casa dell’Auto of Turin, under the direction of Giorgio Giusti. The model represented the culmination of Testadoro’s engineering efforts in the sub-750 cubic centimetres racing class and was named after Giusti’s second daughter, Daniela. Production was confined to four known units, all equipped with advanced mechanical components designed by engineer Arnaldo Roselli, who was recognized for his development of the “Testa d’Oro” cylinder head for Fiat 500 engines. The powertrain comprised a 742 cc inline four-cylinder engine featuring an aluminum alloy cylinder head and dual overhead camshafts. The engine was capable of producing approximately 48 horsepower at 7,000 revolutions per minute. Power was transmitted via a five-speed manual gearbox. The chassis, designated “Isorigid,” was constructed by Gilco using small-diameter steel tubing arranged in a triangulated spaceframe configuration to maximize torsional rigidity while minimizing weight. The bodywork was designed and fabricated by Carrozzeria Zagato, utilizing a streamlined “siluro biposto” (two-seat torpedo) form with exposed wheels and numerous air intakes for engine cooling. The aerodynamic profile reflected contemporary racing design trends, emphasizing minimal drag and efficient airflow. The Daniela 750 Sport Testadoro competed extensively during the 1949 racing season, achieving multiple successes in Italian competition. Notable results included a class victory at the Gran Criterium 750 held at Monza, driven by Mejnardi, and a first-place finish at the Senigallia circuit with driver Ugo Puma. Other documented drivers included Antonio Stagnoli and Nuccio Bertone. The presence of multiple Daniela and Marinella vehicles in 1949 competitions led to the formal establishment of the “Squadra Testadoro” racing team. Following Giusti’s retirement from active racing in 1949, some Daniela units were fitted with updated powertrains by third parties and continued to compete. The model is recognized as a technically advanced and competitive design within its displacement class, exemplifying the engineering and coachbuilding capabilities of Italian motorsport in the immediate post-war period.

- Production notes
- Daniela/Testadoro identity and Zagato body are supported. Dating is not fully harmonized: Zagato archive uses 1948 for the Fiat Giusti 750 Daniela Zagato, while Testadoro history places the Daniela in the 1949 programme context. Retain 1948 as current archive dating but keep 1949 as documented programme/presentation context; do not collapse the distinction.

- Daniela/Testadoro competition baseline: inline-four 742 cc, approximately 48 CV at 7000 rpm, 5-speed manual. Period Zagato material claims top speed above 160 km/h and a 26 kg body, but no exact full-vehicle exterior dimensions are materialized. 1948 Zagato archive date and 1949 competition/presentation chronology remain explicitly distinct.
