01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Bristol 412 Convertibile by Zagato is a distinctive and rare vehicle that combines British luxury with Italian flair. Introduced in 1975, the Bristol 412 was an innovative departure for the British manufacturer, representing the culmination of the company’s dedication to craftsmanship and exclusivity. Designed as a two-door convertible, the 412 featured bodywork by Carrozzeria Zagato, known for its expertise in creating unique, bespoke automotive designs. The custom front grille and Targa-style roof similar to the Lancia Beta Spider, which could be removed for an open-air driving experience, made this model especially appealing to enthusiasts seeking a blend of sophistication and sportiness. Bristol’s Type 412 was powered by a Chrysler 6.5L V8 engine, mated to a Torqueflite automatic gearbox, providing ample performance for its luxurious proportions. The model’s sleek yet muscular design, enhanced by Zagato’s touch, was complemented by a powerful engine that allowed the 412 to deliver both comfort and speed. The convertible was built for those who appreciated the finer details of automotive engineering while craving the freedom of open-top motoring. The 412’s first major update came in the form of the Series 2, which introduced a redesigned radiator badge, new bumpers, and a more refined interior. The Series 2 also featured an upgraded Chrysler 5.9L V8 engine, improving both performance and driving dynamics. These changes reflected the company’s ongoing commitment to refinement and adaptation in response to customer feedback and evolving market demands. For the North American market, the Bristol 412 Convertibile was known as the “412 USA” and differed slightly from its European counterpart. It lacked the removable hardtop found on the European model and was fitted with revised headlamps and a catalytic exhaust system to meet the stringent emissions regulations in the United States. A rare example of a convertible that combines traditional British luxury with a dash of Italian design, the Bristol 412 Convertibile by Zagato remains a collector’s gem, admired for its elegance, exclusivity, and the unique collaboration between two automotive giants.
