01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Abarth 1000 Bialbero is a prime example of Carlo Abarth’s expertise in car modifications and engineering. More than just a car, it represents his relentless pursuit of performance and precision. Produced in 1964, the 1000 Bialbero was the latest iteration of a series that started in 1957 with the Abarth 750 Record Monza. Initially, Carlo Abarth felt that the single-shaft engine design of the Fiat 600 limited its potential for racing modifications. Partnering with engineer Gioachino Colombo—who had previously worked with Ferrari, Maserati, and Bugatti—Abarth sought to enhance the engine’s performance by developing a new two-overhead camshaft (DOHC) cylinder head. This innovative design dramatically improved the car’s performance, allowing for higher revs and more power. The Abarth 1000 Bialbero retained the bodywork of the Fiat 600 and the Abarth 750 Zagato, but the addition of the more complex two-cam cylinder head meant that modifications had to be made to the rear section of the bodywork to accommodate the new engine setup. As a result, the car was not only more powerful but also more aerodynamic. In 1961, the Abarth 1000 Bialbero earned the prestigious “Compasso d’Oro” award for its exceptional design. The award recognized the car for its intelligent and innovative design solutions and its stunning aesthetic, which combined functionality with elegance. Abarth’s work on the 1000 Bialbero demonstrated his ability to take a mass-produced car like the Fiat 600 and transform it into a full-fledged racing machine, both in terms of performance and design. The 1000 Bialbero was highly competitive in motorsport, showcasing Abarth’s mastery in car tuning and racing development. While its racing career may not have been as long as some of its counterparts, the car’s combination of ingenuity, style, and technical excellence has ensured that it remains a beloved icon in the world of motorsport.
