01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Stola Phalcon Coupé was a luxury concept vehicle unveiled by the Italian company Stola at the 2007 Geneva Motor Show. Intended as a high-performance grand tourer, the Phalcon was constructed atop the mechanical foundation of the Maybach 57, incorporating extensive modifications in both design and engineering. It represented a synthesis of bespoke coachbuilding tradition with contemporary automotive opulence, conceived during a period of renewed interest in ultra-limited production vehicles. At the mechanical core of the Phalcon lay a 6.3-litre V12 biturbo engine, tuned by Brabus to deliver an output of approximately 750 horsepower. Torque figures approached 1,320 newton-metres, though electronically restricted to 1,100 newton-metres for drivetrain integrity. These figures facilitated a top speed in excess of 330 kilometres per hour, placing the Phalcon among the fastest luxury coupes conceived in its era. The transmission was an automatic unit suited to the substantial torque curve, and the vehicle retained a rear-wheel-drive layout. The Phalcon’s bodywork diverged significantly from its Maybach origins. It exhibited a monolithic and elongated profile, measuring nearly six metres in length and over two metres in width. The exterior design was characterized by a long hood, flowing greenhouse, and a continuous glazed canopy that extended rearward from the windscreen in a single uninterrupted arc. The aesthetic recalled experimental design exercises such as the Maybach Exelero, yet asserted its own visual identity through subtler detailing and a cohesive design language. The vehicle rode on 22-inch alloy wheels fitted with high-performance Pirelli P-Zero tires, accentuating its stance and mass. Stola envisioned the Phalcon not as a singular prototype but as the precursor to a strictly limited production run of 25 units. Each vehicle was to be highly customizable, with clients invited to specify interior configurations, materials, finishes, and nomenclature. Despite these intentions, the Phalcon remained a non-functional concept, with no confirmed production examples. Its development was symbolic of Stola’s aspirations in the realm of ultra-luxury automotive design and served as a final gesture before the brand’s transition away from independent prototyping toward corporate absorption. The Phalcon persists as a conceptual artefact, representing a moment of ambition at the fringes of contemporary grand touring design.
