01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Fiat Cinquecento Cita was a unique creation born out of Fiat’s ambitious project to celebrate the unveiling of its new Cinquecento city car. In December 1991, Fiat initiated a bold collaboration, inviting Italy’s most prestigious coachbuilders to design custom, one-off interpretations of the upcoming model. The project was set to culminate at the 1992 Turin Auto Show, with the special vehicles displayed at Fiat’s stand on April 22. This effort not only showcased the adaptability of the Cinquecento platform but also celebrated the creativity and craftsmanship of Italian automotive design. Fiat provided nine base Cinquecento cars, along with a cash budget of 100,000,000 lire, to nine renowned coachbuilders, including Idea, Bertone, Pininfarina, Italdesign, Zagato, Coggiola, and the Stola-Itca-Maggiora consortium. The goal was for each to create a distinctive version of the city car, demonstrating its potential to be reimagined in innovative ways. Among these one-offs was the Cinquecento Cita, crafted by the Stola-Itca-Maggiora consortium and designed by Aldo Garnero. The name “Cita,” meaning “little one” in the Piedmontese dialect, was a playful nod to the Moretti Cita, another compact and charming car that had left its mark on Italian automotive history. Aldo Garnero, who had previously worked on the Panda Destriero project, infused the Cita with his characteristic ingenuity and attention to detail. The result was a highly original take on the Cinquecento, combining its compact, urban-friendly design with unique stylistic elements that set it apart from the standard model. When unveiled at the Turin Auto Show, the Cita captured attention for its blend of practicality and charm, standing as a testament to the collaborative spirit of Italian coachbuilding. Although it remained a one-off concept, the Cita exemplified the creativity and craftsmanship that defined the Italian automotive scene of the era. Today, it serves as a fascinating footnote in Fiat’s history and a reminder of the endless possibilities that can emerge when artistry meets engineering.
