01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Fiat Panda Destriero was a unique show car created in 1991 by Stola S.p.A. of Turin, based on the first-generation Fiat Panda platform. The project was initiated in mid-March 1991, shortly after the unveiling of the Fiat Proteo concept at the Geneva Motor Show. Roberto Stola entrusted his nephew, Alfredo Stola, with the task of developing a new one-off vehicle that would celebrate Italian craftsmanship and design ingenuity. The vision was to reinterpret the concept of the 1960s Fiat 500 and 600 Jolly Ghia “beach cars” through a contemporary lens—combining nostalgia, innovation, and artisanal quality. Under the creative direction of Alfredo and Maria Paola Stola, and guided by Giuseppe Civardi, technical manager at the Fiat Style Center, the project evolved into the Fiat Panda Destriero. The exterior design was penned by Aldo Garnero and built entirely by hand, intended to demonstrate Stola’s construction capabilities independent of client confidentiality restrictions. The bodywork was executed by Opac, specialists in convertible and limited-series construction, while the interior was upholstered by Salt of the Gavina family, renowned for their premium materials and craftsmanship. The Fiat Panda Destriero retained the Panda’s front-engine, front-wheel-drive mechanical layout, with modest mechanical changes. Instead, the transformation focused on design and finishing. The open-top “spiaggetta” configuration featured flowing side lines, bespoke brightwork, and luxurious materials—a sophisticated reinterpretation of the classic Italian beach car. Originally named “Mirage,” the prototype was photographed in Portofino on September 3, 1991. Fiat’s senior management, including engineer Paolo Cantarella, later suggested renaming the car “Destriero,” in homage to the ocean-going speed record vessel sponsored by Fiat at the time. Only two examples of the Fiat Panda Destriero were produced. The project represented a pivotal step for Stola, marking its transition toward independently developed show cars. The Panda Destriero remains an emblem of early 1990s Italian design creativity, uniting Fiat’s approachable engineering with the elegance and artistry of Turin’s finest coachbuilding tradition.
