01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Stola Carlo Mollino Record Car is a full-scale concept model constructed in 2006, based on a land speed record vehicle design conceived by the Italian architect and designer Carlo Mollino during the mid-20th century. Known for his work across architecture, industrial design, and photography, Mollino maintained a consistent interest in aerodynamics and high-speed vehicular form. The original design for the car, though documented through sketches and studies, remained unrealized during Mollino’s lifetime. The car was produced by Stola S.p.A., a Turin-based automotive prototype specialist founded in 1919. The model was commissioned by the Museo Casa Mollino in conjunction with a retrospective exhibition held at the Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Turin. Stola constructed the vehicle as an interpretive rendering of Mollino’s vision, extrapolated from his original design documentation and technical notes. The result was not a functional prototype but a full-scale, non-operational representation intended for static exhibition. The dimensions of the Record Car measure approximately 5.3 meters in length, 1.96 meters in width, and 0.85 meters in height, with a total mass of approximately 1,150 kilograms. The body exhibits a fully enclosed, streamlined form, characterized by a teardrop profile and faired wheel arches. The cockpit is centrally positioned and encapsulated by a glazed canopy. The design articulates a synthesis of biomorphic modernism and the formal purity of aerodynamic experimentation prevalent in mid-century European industrial aesthetics. The car was constructed using contemporary fabrication methods while adhering to the spirit of Mollino’s original intention. Although never developed for operation, the model suggests accommodation for a mid-mounted powertrain, with minimal ground clearance and pronounced emphasis on low-drag body surfaces. It serves as a static embodiment of theoretical performance, emblematic of the designer’s belief in speed as a formal and symbolic imperative. In 2015, the Stola Carlo Mollino Record Car was auctioned as an art object. It remains unique, both as a posthumous manifestation of a conceptual design and as a case study in the intersection of modernist ideation and industrial craft. The vehicle occupies a liminal space between sculpture and automobile, bearing testament to a designer whose ambitions frequently exceeded practical realization.
