01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Mercedes-Benz Maybach concept, unveiled at the 1997 Tokyo Motor Show, represented Daimler-Benz’s vision of absolute luxury and technical refinement for the 21st century. Developed by the brand’s Advanced Design Studio in Japan, the car served as a tangible preview of what would eventually become the reborn Maybach marque—a revival of the legendary German luxury manufacturer originally founded in the early 20th century. Based on an extended W140 S-Class platform, the Maybach concept measured over six meters in length, emphasizing interior space and presence. The bodywork combined aluminum, magnesium, and composite materials to achieve a smooth, monumental silhouette with minimal surface interruptions. The front featured a bold reinterpretation of the Mercedes grille, flanked by sharp headlamp clusters, while the rear adopted a clean, tapered design with LED lighting elements that hinted at future production trends. Under the hood was a naturally aspirated 6.0-liter V12 engine, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission—chosen to deliver effortless performance and near-silent operation. The interior was designed exclusively around the needs of rear-seat passengers, featuring fully reclining seats with massage functions, fold-out tables, and advanced telecommunications equipment. A large retractable display, minibar, and electrochromic panoramic roof further emphasized its forward-looking luxury. Technologically, the Mercedes-Benz Maybach concept introduced innovations that would appear on high-end models years later, including ambient lighting, touch-sensitive controls, and adaptive lighting systems. Though it never entered production in its concept form, the 1997 Maybach directly informed the development of the Maybach 57 and 62 sedans launched in 2002. As a design study, it marked a decisive moment for Mercedes-Benz in defining modern ultra-luxury. It was built in Italy by Stola.
