01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Lancia Appia Giardinetta Viotti, unveiled at the Turin Motor Show in the autumn of 1959, marked a distinctive addition to the Appia range with its family-oriented design. Exclusive news of this unveiling centered around Viotti’s creation of the family version, offering a fresh perspective on the renowned Appia series. Retaining the mechanics of the third series sedan, the Giardinetta maintained the front appearance while introducing a uniquely characterized rear featuring a distinctive hatch with hinges at the top. With a higher windshield than its sedan counterpart, this family-oriented vehicle boasted only two side doors for a sleek and efficient design. Inside the passenger compartment, the front seats were thoughtfully divided, and foldable backrests facilitated access to the rear seats. Produced by Viotti exclusively in 1960, the Giardinetta left a lasting impression despite disappearing from the pricelist in the autumn of 1962, with all 50 built specimens finding eager buyers. Despite its limited commercial success attributed to a somewhat divisive aesthetic and a higher price point, the Lancia Appia Giardinetta Viotti earned recognition by winning a category prize at the prestigious 1960 Concours d’Elegance of Rome. Despite its brief stint on the market, the Giardinetta remains a testament to Viotti’s dedication to innovative design within the Lancia Appia series.
