01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Lancia Augusta Berlina, chassis number 341292, is a one-off coachbuilt saloon constructed in 1934 by Viotti on the Lancia Augusta Type 234 long-wheelbase platform. This example is considered unique, with no known counterparts produced or surviving. It is distinguished within the broader corpus of Viotti-bodied vehicles for its distinct application of formal proportion and understated aerodynamic detailing, consistent with stylistic influences derived from the work of Mario Revelli di Beaumont, who collaborated with several Turin-based carrozzerie during this period. The mechanical configuration corresponds to the standard Augusta specification. The engine is a narrow-angle V4 of 1,195 cc displacement, equipped with a single Zenith carburetor. It produced approximately 35 horsepower at 4,000 rpm. The powertrain employed a four-speed manual transmission driving the rear wheels. Suspension consisted of independent sliding pillar units at the front and a live rear axle mounted on semi-elliptic leaf springs. Braking was effected by mechanically operated drums on all four wheels. The Viotti body is a four-door saloon executed in steel over a timber frame. It retains the upright proportions of the standard Augusta but introduces softened lines and integrated volumes not commonly found in factory-bodied examples. The two-tone exterior livery, rendered in brown and beige, is complemented by painted wire wheels and a front grille matched to the lighter body tone. A single spare wheel is mounted at the rear. The interior is upholstered in beige cloth with tonally matched lacquered wood trim, and the dashboard follows the period-appropriate symmetrical layout. The right-hand driving position is retained. Chassis 341292 is the only documented example of this specific Berlina configuration by Viotti. There is no record of additional units produced in this style. The car remains the sole known survivor. It has been preserved with matching engine and chassis numbers and is eligible for historic registration and concours presentation.
