01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Lancia Appia Coupé Viotti represents a significant collaboration between Lancia and Pininfarina during the late 1950s and early 1960s, combining elegant design with improved performance over its sedan counterpart. Produced between 1959 and 1962, a total of 785 units of the Lancia Appia Coupé Viotti were manufactured, adding a touch of exclusivity to its appeal. Initially, Pininfarina oversaw the production of 302 examples of this stylish coupe. Subsequent to the launch of the third series of the Lancia Appia sedan in spring 1959, several enhancements were introduced to the coupe variant. These improvements included a modest increase in power output from 53 to 54 horsepower, achieved through refinements to the engine head, timing system, and fuel system. The cooling system was also upgraded to handle the improved performance more effectively. One notable technical enhancement was the introduction of new double-winding front drum brakes, designed to enhance stopping power and improve overall braking performance. These upgrades aimed to not only refine the driving experience but also to maintain Lancia’s reputation for engineering excellence and innovation. Stylistically, the Lancia Appia Coupé Viotti retained the graceful lines and proportions that Pininfarina was known for, capturing the essence of Italian automotive design during the post-war era. Its coupe body style offered a blend of sporty elegance and practicality, appealing to buyers seeking a sophisticated yet agile vehicle. Today, the Lancia Appia Coupé Viotti remains a coveted classic car among collectors and enthusiasts, celebrated for its distinctive design, technical refinement, and its role in the evolution of Lancia’s lineup during the early 1960s. Its limited production numbers and association with PininFarina underscore its significance in automotive history, embodying the era’s fusion of style and engineering prowess from one of Italy’s most esteemed coachbuilders.
