01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Fiat 1200 Gran Turismo was a low-volume coachbuilt variant produced by Carrozzeria Viotti on the Fiat 1200 chassis from 1958. It represents the extension of Viotti’s Granluce body architecture from the Fiat 600 to the larger 1100/103D and 1200 ranges. Body design was executed by Giovanni Michelotti. The defining element of the Granluce body was the panoramic windscreen combined with an increased glass area, a solution already established in Viotti production by the mid-1950s. On the Fiat 1200, this feature was integrated into a longer wheelbase and more conventional three-box layout, requiring revised proportions and a flatter bodyside treatment. The design reused recognizable Granluce cues while adapting them to the structural and dimensional constraints of the 1200 platform. The model was marketed as Gran Turismo, a designation reflecting its positioning rather than a distinct body series. Within Viotti nomenclature, Granluce functioned as a descriptive term identifying cars with panoramic glazing rather than as a formal model name. The Fiat 1200 Gran Turismo therefore belongs to the Granluce lineage despite not carrying the designation officially. Front-end treatment differed from earlier Viotti applications, with a fully open and functional radiator grille and sharper definition at the leading edge. Chrome application was restrained, and emphasis was placed on linear surfaces rather than sculptural form. Period finishes frequently included two-tone paint schemes, typically with contrasting roof and bodyside elements, consistent with late-1950s Viotti practice. Production was limited, probably 12 units with less than a handful still in existance, one was actually owned by Rocco Motto (the coachbuilder). The model was priced above standard Fiat saloons, restricting commercial volume.
