01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Lamborghini 350 GT was the company’s first production model, introduced in 1964 as a direct evolution of the experimental 350 GTV prototype. Engineers Gian Paolo Dallara and Paolo Stanzani, working under Ferruccio Lamborghini, determined that the original 350 GTV design was unsuitable for series production. They initiated a dual program: refining the GTV chassis and powertrain for road use while preparing a completed prototype for display at the 1963 Turin Motor Show. The 350 GT retained several core engineering elements from the GTV, including the all-aluminium 3,464 cc quad-cam V12 engine, a four-wheel independent suspension system, and a lightweight aluminium body. The powerplant, designed by Giotto Bizzarrini, was originally a racing-oriented unit capable of developing up to 400 horsepower at 11,000 rpm. For the 350 GT, Dallara and test driver Bob Wallace extensively reworked the engine to create a more reliable and tractable version suitable for grand touring use. This “L350” engine produced approximately 270 horsepower (201 kW) at 6,500 rpm and 325 Nm of torque at 4,500 rpm, providing a top speed of around 254 km/h (158 mph). The chassis, developed in collaboration with the Neri and Bonacini racing workshop, featured a tubular steel frame with fully independent suspension—double wishbones and coil springs front and rear. Braking was handled by hydraulic discs on all four wheels. The five-speed ZF manual gearbox transmitted power to the rear wheels. Carrozzeria Touring of Milan built the body using its patented Superleggera method. Touring’s chief designer, Federico Formenti, refined the original GTV’s proportions into a cleaner, more cohesive fastback form. Notable changes included replacing the prototype’s rotating headlamps with fixed lights and simplifying the front and rear treatments. The 350 GT debuted at the 1964 Geneva Motor Show, only five months after the GTV’s Turin appearance, receiving widespread acclaim for its refined engineering and elegant execution. Production began in May 1964, with 120 examples built through 1966, establishing Lamborghini’s reputation as a manufacturer of sophisticated grand touring automobiles.
