01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Ford Mustang B1 by OSI represents a unique collaboration between OSI, a subsidiary of Carrozzeria Ghia, and Ford’s operations in Europe. OSI’s history includes notable projects like the Torino and the 20M TS coupe, which hinted at future models like the Capri and were reasonably successful in sales. The OSI Mustang B1, while derived from the Ford Mustang platform with its 271bhp V8 engine intact, underwent significant modifications beyond simple re-bodying. The wheelbase was shortened from 2473mm to 2400mm, accompanied by slightly narrower tracks at both the front and rear. This alteration involved replacing much of the platform with a tubular semi-spaceframe structure, enhancing rigidity and likely improving handling dynamics. A notable departure from the standard Mustang was the adoption of an independent rear suspension setup, a feature rare for its time and complemented by a self-locking ZF differential and all-round disc brakes. The car rode on distinctive knock-off Borrani wire wheels and featured a body constructed from lightweight fiberglass. Visually, the OSI Mustang B1 was distinguished by its innovative fold-flat headlight arrangement, a design element ahead of its time that hinted at future automotive trends seen in cars like the Porsche 928. Inside, the cabin boasted a luxurious blend of features including a mahogany dash, alloy-spoked steering wheel, and upholstery crafted from burgundy leather and plaid trim. Despite its engineering and design innovations, only one OSI Mustang B1 is believed to have been produced. Today, the whereabouts of this unique car remain a mystery, adding to its allure and status as a rare and significant piece of automotive history that bridged American muscle with European styling and engineering expertise.
