01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Fiat AC 4WD, also known as the “Advanced Concept 4WD” was a one-off prototype developed by Carrozzeria Maggiora in collaboration with Euro Design Engineering, led by Aldo Garnero and Joël Bretécher. It was unveiled at the 1988 Turin Motor Show, displayed on Maggiora’s stand alongside Paolo Martin’s Halley concept. The AC 4WD represented an advanced exploration of spatial design and versatility, conceived to bridge the gap between compact urban transport and light-duty off-road capability. The prototype employed a highly unorthodox structure, combining the compact design vocabulary of the Fiat Uno with the mechanical architecture of a shortened Fiat Ducato 4×4 chassis. The result was a compact yet remarkably wide multi-purpose vehicle measuring approximately 3,990 mm in length, 1,980 mm in width, and 1,780 mm in height. This unusually broad stance permitted two rows of three-across seating, accommodating six passengers within a minimal external footprint. The project emphasized interior spatial efficiency and vertical packaging rather than cargo capacity or rugged terrain performance, prefiguring later crossover concepts. Mechanically, the AC 4WD adopted a longitudinally mounted engine and a four-wheel-drive transmission connected through a transfer case and propeller shafts. The drivetrain was believed to be derived from Fiat Professional components of the Ducato 4×4, with adapted suspension geometry, steering, and braking systems. These refinements allowed increased ground clearance and enhanced traction without compromising road usability. Aesthetically, the vehicle featured compact, angular bodywork with short overhangs, wide stance, and integrated plastic cladding. The geometric surfaces, large windows, and upright proportions reflected late-1980s functional design trends centered around space and visibility. Only one example of the Fiat AC 4WD was built, and no production plans followed.
