01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Fiat 600 Country is a rare coachbuilt utility variant derived from the Fiat 600 Multipla and produced in limited numbers by Carrozzeria Francis Lombardi during the late 1950s. Developed in response to the growing post-war demand for compact, multifunctional transport solutions, the model represents a transitional form between the small passenger car and the light commercial vehicle. It was conceived as a versatile solution for both private and professional use, retaining the mechanical simplicity of the base Fiat 600 while introducing considerable changes to the body structure. Built upon the Multipla’s extended floorpan, the 600 Country featured an enlarged and squared-off superstructure. The design included a taller roofline, large rectangular side windows, and a lengthened rear section to accommodate increased passenger or cargo volume. The rear access was typically managed through conventional outward-swinging doors or a vertically split tailgate, depending on customer specification. Interior configurations were adaptable, with options for fixed seating, removable benches, or bare cargo space. The vehicle was powered by the standard rear-mounted, water-cooled inline four-cylinder engine derived from the Fiat 600, displacing 633 cubic centimeters and paired with a four-speed manual transmission. While modest in performance, the drivetrain was considered reliable and economical, suitable for the vehicle’s intended urban and peri-urban operation. The suspension system was adapted from the base model with reinforced components to accommodate increased payload. Carrozzeria Francis Lombardi, active in post-war Italy and headquartered in Vercelli, specialized in low-volume production and one-off commissions, frequently utilizing Fiat mechanicals. The firm is known for its experimental and often pragmatic interpretations of production models, including other Fiat 600 derivatives such as the Lucciola and Maggiolina. The 600 Country is believed to have been produced in extremely limited numbers, possibly fewer than ten units, with minimal surviving documentation. No verified chassis numbers or detailed ownership histories are available through public archives. As a seldom-seen expression of utilitarian coachbuilding on a mass-market platform, the Fiat 600 Country occupies a minor yet illustrative position in the evolution of European multi-purpose vehicles. It exemplifies the ingenuity and resourcefulness of Italian carrozzerie during a period marked by economic reconstruction and functional design innovation.
