01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Fiat 525 SS Viotti was a limited-production sporting automobile constructed on the Fiat 525 Super Sport chassis between 1929 and 1931. The 525 SS variant of the standard 525 featured mechanical modifications intended to improve dynamic performance, including an increased compression ratio and revised carburetion. The power output from the 3,738 cc inline-six engine reached approximately 88.5 horsepower at 3,350 rpm. The chassis was equipped with a four-speed manual transmission and four-wheel hydraulic brakes. Maximum speed was recorded at approximately 120 km/h under standard test conditions. The coachwork for this model was executed by Carrozzeria Viotti of Turin. The body design is attributed to Mario Revelli di Beaumont, an engineer and industrial designer active in pre-war Italian automotive circles. His approach emphasized functional modernism with restrained ornamentation. For the 525 SS, Revelli produced a low-profile, open sports body featuring lightweight aluminum panels, a lowered bonnet line, and integrated wings. Construction techniques incorporated tubular frameworks and sheet alloy panels applied using Viotti’s Clairalpax method, which reduced weight while maintaining structural rigidity. Available evidence indicates a limited production run, with approximately ten to fifteen 525 SS chassis bodied by Viotti to Revelli’s specification. One known chassis, numbered 525SS.204513, was completed in late 1930 and delivered to a private client in Milan. It was registered under license plate ZA 0932 V and remained in Lombardy through the postwar period. It was exhibited at the Padua Auto e Moto d’Epoca show in 2014. The vehicle is believed to be in a private Italian collection. Although conceived with high-speed touring in mind, the Fiat 525 SS Viotti did not have an extensive competition record. Some examples participated in regional events such as the Coppa delle Alpi, but without notable results. The model’s significance lies in its synthesis of Fiat mechanical engineering and early Italian aerodynamic coachwork principles under Revelli’s design influence. As of the most recent data, the Fiat 525 SS Viotti survives in only a handful of examples, primarily in European private collections. It remains a representative artifact of interwar Italian automotive design and a transitional work in Revelli di Beaumont’s early portfolio.
