01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Fiat 508 CS Balilla Sport Zagato was a lightweight competition spider built on Fiat 508 Balilla mechanicals and bodied by Carrozzeria Zagato. Developed in the second half of the 1930s, it belonged to the small-displacement sports cars created for Italian road races such as the Mille Miglia, where low weight and aerodynamic efficiency mattered as much as engine power. The 508 CS was the sporting version of the Fiat Balilla. Its compact chassis and modest engine made it an ideal base for specialist coachbuilders. Zagato’s interpretation focused on reducing drag and saving weight, using a simple open body with smooth, rounded surfaces and carefully faired wheel arches. The result was a small but purposeful racing car, built for speed over long distances rather than comfort or decoration. The body showed many of Zagato’s pre-war ideas about aerodynamics. The front retained a narrow vertical grille and separate headlamps, but the wings were shaped to guide airflow around the wheels. The rear section was long and rounded, with enclosed rear wheels and a tapered tail. The cockpit was minimal, with low doors, a small windscreen, and only the essentials required for competition use. Compared with standard Balilla models, the Zagato-bodied 508 CS looked far more advanced. The side profile was cleaner and lower, while the covered rear wheels gave the car a streamlined appearance typical of the aerodynamic experiments of the period. It was still recognisably based on Fiat components, but the bodywork transformed it into a true small sports racer. The Fiat 508 CS Balilla Sport Zagato is significant because it shows how Italian coachbuilders used lightweight construction and aerodynamic form to make modest mechanical platforms competitive. Before the postwar GT era made Zagato famous internationally, cars like this already defined its approach: compact dimensions, reduced weight, functional details, and a body shaped with racing in mind.
