01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Fiat 508 Balilla Cabriolet by Carrozzeria Viotti represents one of the most elegant interpretations of the improved 508C chassis. Produced in limited numbers during the late 1930s, this example showcases the distinctive design vocabulary of Viotti, a coachbuilder known for pairing technical precision with subtle stylistic innovation. This cabriolet is immediately recognizable by its bold prua di nave front end—a sharp, ship’s prow–like nose that sets it apart from the more conservative factory-bodied versions. The deeply veined grille, flanked by rounded headlamps and flowing fenders, gives the car a sense of forward motion and sculptural presence, blending modern aerodynamic ideas with Art Deco restraint. The car is finished in an understated two-tone combination, with dark wheel arches that contrast with the lighter body color. The folding soft top is neatly integrated and complements the streamlined profile. Inside, the dashboard and instrumentation reflect a careful balance of form and function, with clear dials, chromed accents, and the Viotti signature displayed prominently on the glovebox lid. The interior, trimmed in period-appropriate materials, remains remarkably complete and authentic. Beneath the bodywork lies the mechanical foundation of the Fiat 508C, powered by a 1,089 cc inline-four engine. Independent front suspension and improved chassis geometry made it a significant step forward in comfort and drivability compared to its predecessors. Very few Viotti-bodied 508C cabriolets were produced, and even fewer survive in such intact condition. This example, with its distinctive coachwork, preserved detailing, and rare design flourishes, is a valuable piece of prewar Italian motoring history—less ostentatious than many contemporaries, but with a quiet authority that speaks of craftsmanship, proportion, and originality.
