01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Fiat 508 Balilla Bertone Berlina stands as a testament to the dynamic evolution of automotive design in the 1930s. Bertone, the renowned Italian coachbuilder, played a pivotal role in infusing new styling trends into the Fiat 508 Balilla, showcasing a harmonious blend of form and function. One of the striking features introduced by Bertone was the enveloping wings that adorned the Balilla. These wings not only added a touch of sophistication but also contributed to the aerodynamic profile of the vehicle. The receding bonnet further accentuated the sleek lines, creating a visual appeal that was ahead of its time. Teardrop headlights positioned on the mudguards added a distinctive touch to the Balilla’s exterior, enhancing both aesthetics and functionality. The radiator grill, reminiscent of the new Fiat 1500, added a touch of continuity and coherence to Fiat’s design language across different models. Inside the Balilla, the cockpit received a treatment reminiscent of the successful “Balilla della Signora” or ladies’ Balilla. This design choice not only reflected a sense of continuity within Fiat’s lineup but also highlighted the popularity and success of the earlier model. Interestingly, the design cues introduced by Bertone in the Balilla foreshadowed the future shape of the 508C saloon. This saloon, later evolving into the historic 1100, made its market debut in 1937, cementing Fiat’s commitment to progressive design and innovation.
