01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Fiat 1500 Berlinetta, introduced in the mid-1930s, represents a pivotal moment in prewar Italian automotive design. Coachbuilt by Carrozzeria Touring and styled according to the principles of its founder Felice Bianchi Anderloni, the car exemplified the streamlined, aerodynamic language emerging across Europe during the decade. Touring’s application of its proprietary Superleggera system—an innovative framework of steel tubes over which lightweight alloy panels were affixed—allowed for elegant, flowing bodywork without compromising structural integrity. This technique would go on to influence postwar sports car construction, but its early application on the Fiat 1500 demonstrated its adaptability to more modest platforms. Mechanically, the Berlinetta was underpinned by the Fiat 1500’s standard chassis, equipped with an inline-six engine producing 45 horsepower. While modest by contemporary standards, it was a capable unit that offered smooth operation and sufficient torque for touring applications. The suspension system featured independent front wheels and a live rear axle, a configuration aimed at improving comfort and stability across varying road conditions. The structural rigidity afforded by the ladder frame and careful weight distribution contributed to the car’s composed handling characteristics. The styling of the Berlinetta varied over its limited production, with several configurations appearing between 1937 and 1948, including examples built on the 1500 B, C, and D chassis. A 1939 variant is noted for its distinctive “closed prow” front design, flanked by wide lateral cooling vents—an aesthetic and functional solution to engine ventilation. These details reflect Touring’s ability to integrate form and function without excess. Recognition of the 1500 Berlinetta’s design came early. At the 1936 Concorso d’Eleganza di Stresa, the model was awarded class honors, praised for its proportion, coherence, and attention to detail. Its success indicated a shift in concours culture, acknowledging that technical sophistication and refined aesthetics were no longer exclusive to luxury marques.
