01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Fiat 124 Cross Country was a prototype off-road vehicle developed in 1966 by the Italian coachbuilder Officine Stampaggi Industriali (OSI). Based on the Fiat 124 sedan platform, this concept was designed by Sergio Sartorelli, known for his work on the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Type 34 and the Fiat 2300 S Coupé. Unveiled at the 1966 Turin Motor Show, the 124 Cross Country featured a utilitarian, boxy design with flat body panels, a removable canvas roof, and minimal overhangs, emphasizing its off-road capabilities. The vehicle’s design incorporated elements suitable for rugged terrain, such as increased ground clearance and reinforced bodywork. The prototype utilized the standard Fiat 124’s mechanical components, including its 1.2-liter inline-four engine and rear-wheel-drive layout. While the base model was not equipped with four-wheel drive, the Cross Country’s design suggested potential for off-road use, possibly envisioning adaptations for improved traction and durability. Despite its innovative approach, the Fiat 124 Cross Country remained a one-off prototype and did not enter mass production. The concept demonstrated OSI’s capability to diversify Fiat’s model range and explore niche markets, such as recreational and utility vehicles. The 124 Cross Country stands as an example of 1960s Italian automotive experimentation, reflecting a period when manufacturers and coachbuilders were exploring new vehicle segments and design philosophies.

Specification notes
TECH 2026-09-21 — Ruoteclassiche and coachbuilder history identify OSI's Cross Country as a one-off Fiat 124-based off-road study with Campagnola-derived rear-axle/off-road hardware. That architecture is structured; series 124 dimensions remain unprojected.
