01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Volkswagen EA53 was a prototype vehicle developed in 1957 by Carrozzeria Ghia, with styling by Italian designer Sergio Sartorelli. It was part of Volkswagen’s “Entwicklungsauftrag” (EA) experimental program, which explored possible future models and successors to the Beetle. The EA53 was conceived as a compact two-door sedan that combined Volkswagen’s mechanical reliability with more modern, international styling influences. The design of the EA53 reflected Italian automotive trends of the late 1950s, particularly in its fastback profile, low beltline, and integrated rear fins. Its proportions were more streamlined than the Beetle’s, with a greater emphasis on visual lightness, thanks to slim roof pillars and generous glass areas. Sartorelli’s design featured clean, balanced lines and a relatively upright front end, offering a restrained yet elegant aesthetic. Although clearly distinct, the car was proportioned to align with Volkswagen’s compact vehicle philosophy. Technically, the EA53 retained Volkswagen’s established rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout. It was powered by a 0.9-liter air-cooled flat-four engine producing approximately 32.5 PS at 5,000 rpm. The engine allowed the prototype to reach a claimed top speed of 110 km/h. The car measured 3,713 mm in length and rode on a wheelbase of 2,142 mm, placing it squarely in the compact segment of its time. The EA53 was presented to Volkswagen management in 1957 as a forward-looking design concept. However, it was ultimately not selected for production. Volkswagen chose to pursue development paths that led to the later Type 3 models, introduced in the early 1960s, which also featured a more modern layout and styling compared to the Beetle but remained closer to Volkswagen’s internal design language. Although it never entered production, the Volkswagen EA53 remains a significant example of international collaboration and design exploration, highlighting Ghia’s role in shaping postwar European automotive aesthetics.
