01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Ferrari F100r Roadster, unveiled at the 2000 Turin Motor Show, is a striking evolution of Ferrari’s vision for high-performance open cars, focusing on significantly improving comfort while reducing the common issue of air turbulence experienced in convertibles. Designed by Fioravanti, the F100r serves as the open version of the F100, completing a design program that had begun with the “Challenge” coupé at the 1998 Turin Motor Show and continued with the roadster coupé displayed at the 1999 Milan Triennial Show. One of the most innovative aspects of the Ferrari F100r is its multispherical-type windscreen, engineered to guide airflow in such a way that it directs air towards the rear of the vehicle, effectively shielding the heads of the passengers from disruptive wind. This design not only enhances the car’s aerodynamics but also provides a level of comfort previously unattainable in open-top cars. Additionally, the streamlined structure behind the passengers serves a dual purpose—it acts as a roll-bar for added safety while also incorporating engine air vents and storage for helmets, reinforcing the car’s racing-inspired design. The F100r also features a carefully designed bonnet with a perforated depression zone that releases air efficiently, contributing to the car’s overall aerodynamic performance. On either side of the windscreen, two cameras have been integrated to improve rear visibility, offering a modern solution to the challenge of limited rearward sight in open vehicles. Inside, the Ferrari F100r carries over the bold, innovative characteristics of the coupé model, maintaining a futuristic, driver-focused interior that reflects Ferrari’s commitment to combining performance with cutting-edge technology. The F100r Roadster is not just a beautiful open car; it’s a well-thought-out, forward-looking concept that showcases Ferrari’s ability to blend style, comfort, and technical excellence into a singular, exceptional package.
