01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Alfa Romeo C52 “Disco Volante” Coupé was an experimental sports racing car developed between 1952 and 1953 by Alfa Romeo in collaboration with the Milanese coachbuilder Carrozzeria Touring. The name “Disco Volante,” meaning “Flying Saucer,” reflected the car’s highly aerodynamic, futuristic bodywork, which was designed and refined through wind tunnel testing. The project aimed to explore the limits of aerodynamic efficiency, lightweight construction, and performance for potential competition use. Mechanically, the C52 was derived from the Alfa Romeo 1900 platform but re-engineered for reduced weight and improved handling. The car employed a tubular steel spaceframe chassis and featured a front-mounted 1,997 cc inline four-cylinder engine with double overhead camshafts and twin double-barrel carburetors. Power output was approximately 158 horsepower (118 kW) at 6,500 rpm. The transmission was a four-speed manual unit driving the rear wheels. The car achieved a reported top speed exceeding 220 km/h (137 mph), aided by its low aerodynamic drag and total weight of about 735 kilograms. Suspension consisted of independent double wishbones with coil springs at the front and a live axle with trailing arms and torsion bars at the rear. Braking was provided by hydraulic drum brakes on all four wheels, consistent with Alfa Romeo’s competition specification at the time. Steering was a worm-and-sector type. The streamlined aluminium body was constructed using Touring’s patented “Superleggera” method, in which thin alloy panels were mounted over a lightweight tubular framework. The Coupé version was characterized by its enclosed, flowing form with integrated fenders and fully faired sides designed to minimize turbulence. Only a few C52 Disco Volante models were built, including both open and closed configurations. The Coupé remains the rarest variant, produced in extremely limited numbers. The Alfa Romeo C52 “Disco Volante” Coupé stands as a landmark in postwar automotive aerodynamics, illustrating Touring’s experimental design philosophy and Alfa Romeo’s technical innovation during the early 1950s.
