01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Alfa Romeo Alfetta SW is an interesting and unique creation that marked the brand’s first real attempt at developing a family-friendly wagon in recent years. It was designed to meet the practical needs of a family, with an emphasis on increasing rear volume for leisure and spare time. Built in 1983, this one-off model was the result of the collaboration between the Milan-based atelier Zagato Milano and journalist Luca Grandori, a well-known car expert. This Alfa Romeo Alfetta Station Wagon was an extemporaneous creation, crafted with a vision that perfectly captured the spirit of the 1980s. Designed by Giuseppe Mittino, the wagon had no follow-up production, remaining a unique prototype rather than a mass-produced model. It cleverly used the tail lights from the Fiat Uno, adding a touch of practicality and innovation to the design. While the Alfetta SW never evolved into a full production line, it remains an important chapter in Alfa Romeo’s history, showcasing the brand’s willingness to explore new concepts in response to evolving consumer demands for more versatile and family-oriented vehicles. Despite being a one-off, the Alfetta SW represents a significant effort to merge the practical with the stylish, embodying the Alfa Romeo ethos with a focus on leisure and family use.
