01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Alfa Romeo 6C 2300 “Soffio di Satana” was a limited-production aerodynamic saloon developed by Carrozzeria Touring in 1934–1935. It was based on the long-wheelbase chassis of the Alfa Romeo 6C 2300 Turismo, equipped with a 2,309 cc inline six-cylinder engine producing approximately 68 horsepower (50 kW). The Soffio di Satana represented an early example of Touring’s exploration of aerodynamic streamlining applied to a luxury sedan format. Touring constructed four examples of this special model, all featuring distinctive coachwork designed under the direction of Felice Bianchi Anderloni, who also conceived the car’s name—translated as “Breath of te Devil.” The semi-rigid body structure employed an aluminum skin mounted over a lightweight tubular frame, with a Weymann-type flexible roof. The exterior design was notable for its four-door configuration without a central pillar, a faired rear spare-wheel enclosure integrated into the tail, and a split front bumper formed in a “wing profile,” paired with a narrow horizontal “ribbon” bumper at the rear. The Soffio di Satana retained the mechanical specification of the 6C 2300 Turismo, including the front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout, a four-speed manual gearbox, and leaf-spring suspension front and rear. The braking system consisted of hydraulically operated drums on all wheels. The car’s chassis measured approximately 3,210 mm in wheelbase, while total length exceeded 4,600 mm. Kerb weight was around 1,460 kg, and top speed was near 120 km/h. The interior featured luxury materials and high levels of craftsmanship. Seats and door panels were upholstered in leather with walnut trim inserts. Equipment included silver-framed courtesy lights and a remote-controlled blind for the rear window, operated from the right of the steering wheel. Among the four cars completed, two were purchased by prominent cultural figures of the era: the soprano Gina Cigna and the poet Gabriele D’Annunzio. The Alfa Romeo 6C 2300 Soffio di Satana remains a rare example of 1930s Italian aerodynamic design combined with Touring’s advanced coachbuilding techniques and Alfa Romeo’s engineering precision.
