01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Alfa Romeo 6C 2300 B Corsa Zagato was a competition spider built on the sporting version of Alfa Romeo’s 6C 2300 chassis and bodied by Carrozzeria Zagato. Produced in the late 1930s, it belonged to the period when Alfa Romeo was refining its six-cylinder grand touring and racing cars, while Zagato was applying its experience in lightweight bodies to increasingly streamlined forms. The 6C 2300 B was an important step in Alfa Romeo’s pre-war development. Compared with earlier 6C models, it introduced more advanced chassis engineering, including independent suspension, giving the car better road holding and stability. In Corsa form, the model was intended for competition use, with reduced weight and more focused bodywork. Zagato’s body followed a clear functional approach. The long bonnet accommodated the six-cylinder engine, while the cockpit was placed well back, giving the car classic sports-racing proportions. The wings were separate but smoothly shaped, the tail was tapered, and the doors were cut low for easier access. The side view shows a body built around speed and lightness rather than luxury. The front retained Alfa Romeo’s traditional shield grille, set into a narrow and slightly inclined nose. The headlamps were positioned separately, while the bonnet sides featured long ventilation slots to release engine heat. The open cockpit used a simple windscreen and minimal trim, in keeping with the car’s competition purpose. Compared with larger and heavier coachbuilt Alfa Romeos of the same period, the 6C 2300 B Corsa Zagato was more direct and purposeful. It combined Alfa Romeo’s refined mechanical base with Zagato’s emphasis on light construction, compact volumes and aerodynamic efficiency. The Alfa Romeo 6C 2300 B Corsa Zagato is significant because it represents the meeting point between Alfa Romeo’s advanced pre-war engineering and Zagato’s racing bodywork. It also anticipates the coachbuilder’s later identity: lightweight, competition-focused cars with clean surfaces, reduced mass and a strong visual link between form and function.
