01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 GTC Coupé Royale by Carrozzeria Touring, chassis number 101014832, represents one of the few surviving examples of the GTC variant constructed during the model’s brief production span from 1931 to 1933. A total of 159 units were built. This specific chassis is recorded as the 32nd car produced and was delivered new in 1931. It features bodywork referred to by Touring as “Coupe Royale,” documented under internal drawing number 500. The Coupé Royale was first presented at the 1931 Concorso d’Eleganza in Villa d’Este, where it was awarded the Targa d’Oro in the name of its owner, Miss Mantero.Few Coupe Royale variants are known to have been constructed on the 6C 1750 GTC chassis, and this car is believed to be the only known original survivor retaining both body and matching mechanicals. The 6C 1750 GTC was technically distinct from earlier 6C variants. Its chassis and running gear shared multiple features with the contemporary 8C 2300, including similar axles, suspension configuration with outrigger rear springs, and gearbox layout, although the powertrain remained a supercharged 1,752 cc inline-six. These mechanical attributes allowed the model to deliver touring capability with increased structural robustness, and a level of performance suitable for fast road use and competition. This example entered the UK in 1949, registered as KXO 590, and was offered for sale in 1950 by Character Cars of Wimbledon. It passed through a number of British owners before being repatriated to Italy in 1983. It remained with collector Alfredo Celli for nearly three decades and was comprehensively restored in the mid-1990s. Restoration work was carried out by Dino Cognolato, with mechanical work completed by Gianni Torelli. Touring’s Carlo Felice Bianchi Anderloni advised on the return to its original convertible configuration. In this form, it received a class award at the Louis Vuitton Concours at Bagatelle in 1996. The car retains matching chassis and engine numbers, original coachwork, and appropriate period components, with modifications made only to improve usability in modern driving conditions.
