01 / THE STORY
History & context
Alfa Romeo 6C 1500 Cabriolet Touring is a 1927 cabriolet built by Touring of Milan. It brought the Alfa Romeo 6C 1500 name together with Touring’s early work in open coachwork. The car’s defining construction detail was the double articulation of its hinges, which gave the convertible top a smooth movement. Touring applied this solution to the roof mechanism while maintaining the long, graceful body lines and closely finished exterior details described for the cabriolet.
The hinged roof arrangement formed a conspicuous part of the car’s construction. Its double articulation distinguished the movement of the convertible top and expressed the attention given to the mechanism beneath the open body. The system was presented as a technical solution within a cabriolet whose appearance depended on the relationship between the raised roof, the open cockpit and the body’s flowing profile. The car combined that articulated top with a formal treatment of its panels and details, rather than separating mechanical features from the coachwork around them.
Touring of Milan built the Alfa Romeo 6C 1500 Cabriolet Touring with an emphasis on elegant proportion and crafted finish. Its exterior used graceful lines, while the bodywork received carefully executed details throughout. The cabriolet’s character rested on these visible elements and on the operation of its convertible top: the articulated hinges allowed the hood to move smoothly as it was raised or lowered. This 1927 Alfa Romeo joined Touring’s early cabriolet work with a specific roof-hinge design and a body shaped around open-car motoring.
The Alfa Romeo 6C 1500 Cabriolet Touring remained defined by the combination of its open body, its carefully finished details and the double-articulated hinges of its roof. Touring treated the top mechanism as an integral part of the cabriolet rather than as a separate fitting. The smooth operation attributed to the articulated hinges complemented the car’s composed profile, with the body’s lines continuing to provide its principal visual character whether the top was raised or lowered.
Built in Milan by Touring, the cabriolet paired this distinctive hood arrangement with the restrained, graceful form described for its coachwork. Its technical detail lay in the double articulation of the hinges; its visual treatment lay in the body lines and meticulous detailing. The 1927 model therefore combined an Alfa Romeo 6C 1500 identity with Touring’s construction of a convertible body and its articulated roof mechanism.
