01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 SS Panoramica by Zagato was constructed in 1949 as a one-off vehicle using chassis number 2211114. The chassis originated as part of a 1933 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Monza and had sustained damage during its early competitive use. Alfa Romeo subsequently converted the frame to 6C 2500 Super Sport specification. The drivetrain consisted of a 2,443 cc inline six-cylinder engine with dual overhead camshafts, hemispherical combustion chambers, aluminum cylinder head, and triple Weber carburetors. In Super Sport configuration, the engine produced approximately 110 horsepower. A four-speed manual gearbox transferred power to the rear axle. The suspension utilized independent front control arms and a live rear axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs. Drum brakes were fitted to all four wheels. Zagato constructed the Panoramica body using aluminum panels over a tubular steel substructure. The design incorporated continuous flamboyant style elements, and in the upper section of the body, Plexiglas side and rear windows and a roof panel that eliminated the conventional rear quarter pillars. The intent was to improve visibility and reduce visual mass. The profile remained compact, and external ornamentation was minimal. The car retained a two-door, two-seat configuration. No series production followed, and this example was not listed in Alfa Romeo’s official catalogs. The vehicle resurfaced in North Africa during the 1960s and was later repatriated to Europe. At some point after its rediscovery, the Panoramica body was removed and the car was rebuilt with bodywork replicating the original 8C Monza configuration. The 1949 Panoramica specimen represents a hybrid structure: a pre-war competition chassis fitted with post-war coachwork designed under Zagato’s experimental panoramic visibility concept. Only one vehicle was built in this configuration.
