01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Maserati A6G54 Zagato Berlinetta Chassis 2155 is an exceptional representation of Maserati’s engineering prowess and Carrozzeria Zagato’s legendary design. As part of the A6G series, the A6G54 was a significant milestone in Maserati’s history. Designed by Gioachino Colombo, an engineer with experience at both Alfa Romeo and Ferrari, the A6G was a highly successful racing car that was known for its exceptional handling and high-performance engine. With a 1,986cc six-cylinder engine, the A6G series was virtually unbeatable in the two-litre class. The A6G54 Zagato, introduced in 1954, was a further evolution, combining Maserati’s racing pedigree with luxury and elegance for the discerning customer. Chassis #2155, completed in 1956, is part of the limited production run of 60 A6G54s, which included both luxurious road cars and competition berlinettas built by Zagato. This particular car, like the others, benefited from the advanced race-bred chassis designed by Gilco, featuring independent front suspension with double wishbones and coil springs, along with a live rear axle supported by quarter-elliptical leaf springs. The car’s powerplant was a wet-sump, twin-cam engine with twin-plug heads, delivering up to 190 horsepower, and fed by triple 40DC03 Weber carburettors. Its braking system was equally advanced, using large, radially vented drum brakes at both ends. The distinctive Zagato coachwork, a hallmark of the brand, was hand-beaten and tailored to each car. Although most A6G54 Zagatos shared certain design cues, such as an aggressive grille with the large Maserati trident and open headlamps, each car had unique elements, such as variations in the bumpers and air intakes. Chassis #2155 is one of the few to have the iconic double-bubble roof, a design feature that provided additional headroom and added to the car’s aerodynamic profile. The car’s early ownership began with Edoardo Lualdi of Italy in 1956. It later passed to Rino Botteon of Switzerland, before making its way to the hands of various owners, including Roberto Quiroz in Mexico in 2005. Throughout its history, Chassis #2155 has participated in several prestigious events, including the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, The Quail A Motorsport Gathering, and Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance, where it showcased its remarkable restoration and continued appeal as a top-tier collector’s car. In 2018, it was auctioned at Gooding & Company’s Pebble Beach Auctions with an estimated value between $4,300,000 and $4,600,000, but did not sell. In July 2023, the car was again offered at the Radius at the Monterey Jet Center, with an estimated price range of $3,250,000 to $3,750,000, but it was not sold once more. This Maserati remains a prized possession of Roberto Quiroz and is slated to appear once again at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in May 2024, where its legacy as one of the finest examples of Maserati’s collaboration with Zagato will continue to captivate automotive enthusiasts. With its combination of race-bred technology, unique design, and rich history, the Maserati A6G54 Zagato Berlinetta Chassis #2155 stands as a timeless classic and a true testament to the artistry of Zagato’s craftsmanship.
