01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Fiat 600 D Zagato represents a rare and unique modification by the esteemed Carrozzeria Zagato of Milan. During its era, various coachbuilders created their interpretations of the Fiat 600, enhancing its exterior with chrome accents, special paint schemes, and distinctive features. However, the Fiat 600 D Zagato stands out as it was directly modified and sold by Zagato themselves, as indicated by its registration papers stating “Sales Declaration released by: Carrozzeria ZAGATO S.p.A. Milano”. Externally, this Fiat 600 showcases a striking duo-tone paint scheme and is adorned with Zagato’s iconic Z logo on the dashboard, hubcaps, and sides of the car. The interior boasts luxurious upgrades including special gauges, a Nardi steering wheel, and unique upholstery. Adding to its allure are the exquisite Borrani alloy wheels fitted with bespoke hubcaps. Under the hood, the Fiat 600 D Zagato received mechanical enhancements from the renowned Stanguellini of Modena, a formidable rival to Abarth during that period. The engine was notably tuned for increased performance, featuring a special Stanguellini head and a bespoke exhaust system tailored for this particular car. The “libretto” of this 600 D documents these modifications, stating: “Derivata Zagato Elaborazione Milano. Il motore modello 100D000 nr. 2233518 é stato trasformato e potenziato”. This Fiat 600 is likely a one-of-a-kind creation, distinguished not only by its association with Zagato but also by the meticulous attention to detail and performance upgrades implemented by Stanguellini. Its rarity and bespoke modifications make it a prized piece of automotive history, appealing to collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate unique, handcrafted vehicles from Italy’s rich motoring heritage.
