01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Lancia Appia GTE Zagato was a limited-production, lightweight coupé developed by Carrozzeria Zagato on the basis of the third-series Lancia Appia chassis. Introduced in 1958 and produced until 1962, the GTE—acronym for Gran Turismo Esportazione—was conceived as a more refined and aerodynamic alternative to the standard Appia saloon. It was the first Zagato-bodied Appia officially marketed through Lancia’s dealer network and represented a transition from bespoke coachbuilding toward semi-industrialized limited series. The vehicle was based on the Lancia Appia Tipo 812 platform, specifically the third-series chassis designated 812.01 for early production and 812.03 for later examples. The mechanical configuration included a front-mounted, narrow-angle V4 engine with a displacement of 1,089 cc. The engine employed a single carburetor and produced between 53 and 60 horsepower over the model’s production lifespan. Power was transmitted via a four-speed manual gearbox to a rear live axle. Front suspension featured independent sliding pillar units, while the rear utilized semi-elliptic leaf springs. Drum brakes were fitted at all four corners. The coachwork, constructed from hand-formed aluminum panels, adhered to Zagato’s design principles of aerodynamic efficiency and weight reduction. Early GTE models featured faired-in, Plexiglas-covered headlamps and a distinctive fastback silhouette with a low roofline and curved rear window. The streamlined form was punctuated by modest brightwork and functional ventilation details. Later versions, built after 1959, omitted the covered headlamps to comply with updated homologation regulations and incorporated minor changes to trim and detailing. Production of the Appia GTE Zagato was approximately 300 units. The first series accounted for 167 examples on the 812.01 chassis. Subsequent production transitioned to the 812.03 chassis with slightly increased engine output and revised bodywork. Individual chassis were often completed to order, resulting in variations in detail and specification. Known chassis numbers include 81201.2391 and 81201.3277. The Lancia Appia GTE represents an intersection of Lancia’s engineering precision and Zagato’s lightweight design ethos. Though not intended for mass production, it remains a significant example of late-1950s Italian GT development and a notable component of Lancia’s broader postwar sporting identity.
