01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Lamborghini 400 GT Flying Star, designed by Carrozzeria Touring, was a stunning fusion of timeless elegance and modern performance. Inspired by the prewar Touring Flying Stars that graced cars like Alfa Romeo, Lancia, and Isotta Fraschini, the 400 GT Flying Star pushed the boundaries of automotive design. Based on Lamborghini’s 400 GT, the car featured a lightweight aluminum V12 engine and a 5-speed transmission, ensuring a thrilling driving experience. With independent suspension and disc brakes at all corners, the Flying Star offered superb handling and impressive stopping power. Touring’s design focused on a low, compact body that was both stylish and practical. The two-seater configuration allowed for a sleek aesthetic while emphasizing a focus on luxury and ample luggage space, perfect for grand touring. This balance of elegance and functionality set the Flying Star apart in the high-performance car world. This model also marked the end of an era for Carrozzeria Touring before its revival in 2006. Touring’s craftsmanship continued to shine with models like the A8GCS Berlinetta, introduced in 2008. On November 3, 1966, just before the Flying Star II was set to debut at the Turin Motor Show, a mishap occurred during transport. While loading the car onto an OM Tigrotto truck, one of the ramps shifted, causing the car to fall and suffer a dent. Engineer Bianchi, typically calm, was understandably upset but quickly arranged for repairs. By evening, the Flying Star was restored and ready for its journey to the show. With the transporter already en route, Bianchi drove the car to Turin himself. After completing the insurance paperwork in Milan, his assistant, Rizzi, took over the drive. Along the way, a group of onlookers gathered around the car, and one remarked, “Wouldn’t you take a ride in that car? But not with that old guy!” At 42, Rizzi laughed at the lighthearted comment, marking a memorable moment in the Flying Star II’s journey.
