01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Alfa Romeo 1900 C52 “Disco Volante,” a collaboration between Alfa Romeo and Milanese coachbuilder Carrozzeria Touring, represents an iconic chapter in automotive history. Produced between 1952 and 1953, this masterpiece is fondly known as the Alfa Romeo Disco Volante, translating to “Flying Saucer” in Italian. Renowned for its distinctive and futuristic design, the Disco Volante stands as a testament to Italian craftsmanship and innovation. The Alfa Romeo Disco Volante Spider, crafted with streamlined and wind tunnel-tested bodywork, debuted in 1952, featuring a 2-liter all-alloy four-cylinder engine. Three of these extraordinary spiders were meticulously built, capturing the essence of aerodynamic prowess and avant-garde styling. The result was not merely an automobile but a work of art that pushed the boundaries of design and engineering during its era. In a display of adaptability and continuous evolution, one of the spiders underwent a transformation in 1953, transitioning into a coupe, while another embraced a more conventional spider appearance. These modifications showcased the versatility of the Disco Volante’s design and its ability to captivate enthusiasts with both innovative and classic aesthetics. Notably, two additional examples were introduced with a six-cylinder 3.5-liter engine sourced from the Alfa Romeo 6C 3000 CM racing car. This powerplant elevated the performance of the Disco Volante, underlining its connection to Alfa Romeo’s racing heritage. The inclusion of the robust six-cylinder engine added a layer of dynamism to an already exceptional vehicle, further solidifying its place among automotive legends. Despite the limited production, with only five cars built in total, four of these Alfa Romeo Disco Volante examples have survived the test of time. Each surviving specimen stands as a rare and cherished piece of automotive history, meticulously preserved to showcase the groundbreaking design and engineering brilliance that defines the Disco Volante. The Alfa Romeo Disco Volante remains a symbol of the golden era of Italian automotive design, where creativity, craftsmanship, and performance converged to create timeless masterpieces. Today, these surviving examples continue to captivate car enthusiasts and collectors alike, serving as a living testament to the enduring legacy of Alfa Romeo and the spirit of innovation that defines the world of classic automobiles.
