01 / THE STORY

History & context

In 1962, Alfa Romeo commissioned Zagato to develop a Sport Zagato (SZ) version of the Alfa Romeo 2600. The project was entrusted to Ercole Spada, then a young but already highly talented designer at Zagato. His proposal featured a bold and experimental body, characterized by a coda tronca (Kamm tail), a solution derived from contemporary aerodynamic research aimed at reducing drag while maintaining high-speed stability. The prototype combined the refined six-cylinder mechanicals of the 2600 with a lightweight, competition-inspired coupé body. The design stood out for its clean surfaces, compact volumes, and a rear end abruptly cut off to optimize airflow separation—an approach that emphasized function over stylistic convention. This coda tronca gave the car a distinctly modern and technical appearance, aligning it with the most advanced aerodynamic thinking of the early 1960s. However, after the completion of the prototype, Alfa Romeo reconsidered this radical rear treatment. While acknowledging the aerodynamic validity of Spada’s solution, the company felt that the truncated tail was too extreme for a production model aimed at a broader clientele. As a result, Alfa Romeo requested a redesign of the rear section, which was softened into a more “normal” and conventional fastback form for the series-production version of the 2600 SZ. The car shown here represents that original experimental phase, before the stylistic compromise imposed by production requirements. It stands as an important historical document of Zagato’s research-driven design approach and of Ercole Spada’s early contribution to Italian automotive styling, capturing a moment when innovation briefly took precedence over market expectations.
