01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Jaguar XK150 Zagato is a rare example of bespoke post-war automotive coachbuilding, combining British engineering with Italian design. Only two units of this vehicle were produced, making it one of the most exclusive derivatives of the Jaguar XK150 series. The model reflects a singular intersection between the Jaguar marque and the Milanese design house Carrozzeria Zagato. The genesis of the first car began in 1957, when Jaguar produced a rolling chassis, identified as S834369, at its Browns Lane facility. This chassis was commissioned by a Swiss Jaguar dealer and dispatched to Zagato in Italy, where it received a custom lightweight aluminum coupé body. The vehicle was unveiled at the 1958 Geneva Motor Show, where it was displayed on Zagato’s stand. The car featured streamlined bodywork distinct from the standard XK150, integrating aerodynamic elements characteristic of Zagato’s design language at the time. It retained Jaguar’s 3.4-litre inline-six engine, consistent with the XK150 SE specification. A second example is believed to have been constructed, reportedly presented at the 1960 Paris Motor Show. While it shares the Zagato bodywork lineage, differences in front-end treatment and bumper configuration distinguish it from the 1958 Geneva car. The exact provenance and subsequent history of the second car remain partially undocumented. Following its exhibition, the first XK150 Zagato was exported to the United States in the early 1960s. It changed ownership in 1964 and remained out of public view for several decades. It was later restored in the 21st century by marque specialists, who reconstructed significant portions of the bodywork due to the absence of original tooling and references. The restoration involved extensive archival research and artisanal fabrication. The Jaguar XK150 Zagato occupies a distinct position in automotive history. It is a singular embodiment of transnational collaboration during the mid-20th century, merging British mechanical architecture with Italian stylistic principles. Its extreme rarity, coupled with its unique design and historical obscurity, has cemented its status as a significant collector’s artifact within the classic car community.
