01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Fiat 1100 Corsa Bertone, a remarkable design for its era, made its public debut at the 1946 Lausanne Exhibition. Built on the chassis of the Fiat 1100 B, this roadster showcased an audacious and forward-thinking design that was nearly ahead of its time. Its most striking feature was the integral “ponton” flank, a design element that would become a hallmark of postwar automotive styling, characterized by the smooth, uninterrupted bodywork that eliminated separate fenders. Adding to its innovative appeal, the Fiat 1100 Corsa Bertone was equipped with a small folding windscreen, a detail that emphasized its sporty and minimalist character. This feature underscored the car’s lightweight design philosophy, aimed at enhancing performance and aerodynamics. It also featured the heart shaped front grille seen also on the Fiat 1500 C designed by Mario Revelli di Beaumont. The Corsa roadster demonstrated Bertone’s ability to push the boundaries of design, even during the challenging postwar years. It reflected a clear departure from prewar aesthetics, signaling a shift toward a more modern, integrated design language. The model not only highlighted Bertone’s talent for innovation but also represented a collaboration with Fiat that celebrated creativity and engineering. As an early example of the streamlined, modern aesthetic that would come to define postwar automobiles, the Fiat 1100 Corsa Bertone remains an important piece of automotive history. It serves as a testament to the resilience and ingenuity of Italian design during a transformative era.
