01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Volkswagen EA53 Ghia prototype, presented to the VW board on March 23, 1961, stands as a fascinating example of mid-20th-century automotive design and the innovative ideas that were explored within the Volkswagen brand. This concept car, designed by the famed Italian design house Ghia, was built with a wheelbase of 2.40 meters and featured a rear-mounted boxer engine, similar to the design elements found in the iconic Volkswagen Beetle. Despite its promising features, the EA53 Ghia prototype was ultimately rejected by Volkswagen. The design was meant to explore a more streamlined and modern version of the brand’s classic rear-engine layout, offering a more stylish and dynamic alternative to the existing models in the VW lineup. The clean, elegant lines of the car and its functional yet attractive profile represented a blend of form and practicality, with Ghia’s signature styling touches visible throughout the prototype. However, after presenting the prototype to the Volkswagen board, the EA53 was not chosen for production. While the design was appreciated, it did not align with Volkswagen’s broader vision at the time, and the company ultimately chose to continue with other directions for their future models. Although the EA53 Ghia prototype never made it to production, it remains an important moment in Volkswagen’s design history. It illustrates the creative potential that was explored during the era, even if some ideas were not fully realized. Today, the EA53 prototype is seen as a rare example of Ghia’s influence on Volkswagen’s design development and a reminder of the many “what-ifs” that could have shaped the future of the brand.
