01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Triumph SD2 Michelotti prototype, constructed in the early 1970s, was a design study executed as part of British Leyland’s internal development programme for a mid-size saloon intended to replace the Triumph Dolomite. The SD2 project was conceived during a period of structural uncertainty within British Leyland, as the company sought to rationalize its range of marques and products in response to increasing market pressures and internal inefficiencies. Among the external styling proposals commissioned for the programme was a concept produced by Giovanni Michelotti, whose relationship with the Triumph brand had previously yielded a number of commercially successful and stylistically distinctive models. Michelotti’s proposal adhered to a conservative three-box saloon format, rendered in steel and glass with restrained surface treatment and linear proportions. The frontal aspect carried elements consistent with Triumph’s late-1960s identity, including rectangular headlamps set into a horizontally styled grille, a modest beltline, and subtle curvature in the fender forms. The side profile was devoid of superfluous ornamentation, reflecting Michelotti’s established preference for clarity of line and functional coherence. The prototype was constructed on a dedicated chassis, distinct from production Dolomite components but engineered to accommodate similar mechanical systems. The vehicle was intended to use the rear-wheel-drive layout familiar to Triumph sedans of the period, with engine options ranging from the 1.5-litre four-cylinder unit to the 2.0-litre 16-valve engine derived from the Dolomite Sprint. Suspension design, track width, and braking components were under development at the time of the project’s cessation. Only a single Michelotti SD2 prototype is known to have been constructed, bearing registration CWK 593K. This vehicle remained under internal evaluation at British Leyland until the SD2 programme was cancelled amid financial retrenchment and the company’s shifting strategic priorities. The prototype was subsequently retained in private ownership and has appeared at select heritage exhibitions. It remains in largely original condition, offering a rare material insight into the alternative design trajectories available to British Leyland during its period of institutional transformation. The Triumph SD2 Michelotti prototype stands as a closed chapter in the history of Triumph and its association with Italian design, reflecting both unrealized potential and the broader turbulence of British automotive development in the 1970s.
