01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Stutz Bearcat II, introduced in 1988, marked a dramatic departure from its predecessors, replacing the previous Blackhawk and Bearcat models. It represented the most radical change in the company’s history, combining traditional luxury with modern sports car technology in a compact and innovative design. Unlike earlier Stutz models, the Stutz Bearcat II was significantly more compact, designed to appeal to a new generation of luxury sports car enthusiasts. While the body retained the classic, elegant Stutz shape, it was built upon the compact chassis and drive technology of the Pontiac Firebird, with its chassis and drivetrain left largely unchanged. This allowed the Bearcat II to offer improved performance and handling, while still embodying the luxury and craftsmanship Stutz was known for. The body was made from lightweight plastic, which contributed to the car’s reduced weight and enhanced performance. For the first time in two decades, the Stutz Bearcat II was offered exclusively as a convertible, with no coupe option available. The decision to go all-in on the convertible design gave the car a fresh, open-air appeal, marking a significant shift in Stutz’s design direction. Despite its smaller dimensions, it maintained many of the signature styling elements that had made earlier Stutz models iconic. The compact proportions gave the car a unique, independent look while still nodding to the classic elements of the brand’s legacy. The interior featured hand-sewn leather upholstery, hand-polished wood accents, and gold leaf plating on nearly all visible instruments and levers. These luxurious touches ensured that the Bearcat II upheld the high standards of craftsmanship that Stutz was renowned for, offering an opulent driving experience despite its smaller size. The Bearcat II was priced at $125,000 in the United States, a premium for a car that was both innovative and deeply rooted in the Stutz tradition. Only 12 units were built by Carrozzeria Saturn, with at least eight of those completed in 1988. Production ceased in 1989, but the sale of the remaining vehicles continued into the early 1990s. In 1995, a thirteenth vehicle was said to have been assembled from spare parts, adding to the rarity of this already exclusive model. In conclusion, the Bearcat II was a bold reimagining of the luxury sports car, blending traditional Stutz luxury with modern technology and a compact, sporty design. Though it marked the end of an era for Stutz’s classic models, it also highlighted the brand’s adaptability and commitment to creating unique, high-performance vehicles that could stand the test of time. The Bearcat II remains a rare and highly sought-after collector’s item, embodying both the innovation and craftsmanship that defined the brand’s legacy.
