01 / THE STORY

History & context

Behold the Stola S81 concept, a breathtaking tribute to automotive excellence conceived to mark Stola‘s 81st anniversary, graced with the masterful design touch of Marcello Gandini. Renowned for his iconic creations such as the original Lancia Stratos, Lamborghini Miura, and Countach, as well as the Alfa Romeo Montreal and Fiat X1/9, Gandini’s artistry lends an unparalleled allure to the S81. Debuting at the prestigious Turin Motor Show in 2000, the S81 concept evokes a sense of nostalgia, echoing the legacy of the automotive marvels that have graced the same stage over the decades. A symbolic homage to the pioneering spirit of the original Lancia Stratos Zero, which captivated audiences thirty years prior in 1970, the S81 stands as a testament to timeless design and innovation. Originally conceived as a mere mock-up, the S81 was envisioned to house the formidable V8 Maserati engine, boasting an impressive power output of 370CV. However, due to Fiat’s reluctance to grant authorization for the use of the Lancia brand, the concept was unveiled under the marque “MG” (Marcello Gandini), a decision that left both Stola and Gandini disheartened. Undeterred by this setback, Stola and Gandini channeled their disappointment into a stroke of brilliance, crafting uniquely crafted rims that pay homage to the iconic Lancia logo. These bespoke details serve as a poignant reminder of the unyielding passion and dedication infused into every aspect of the S81’s design. Despite the challenges faced, the Stola S81 concept stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of innovation and creativity, embodying the spirit of automotive excellence that continues to captivate enthusiasts worldwide. With Gandini’s visionary design and Stola’s unwavering commitment to craftsmanship, the S81 represents a fusion of artistry and engineering that transcends mere transportation, embodying the essence of automotive passion and ingenuity.
