01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Simca Lido is a limited-production cabriolet developed in 1959 by Carrozzeria Bertone for the French manufacturer Simca. Based on the Simca Aronde Océane platform, the Lido was conceived as a more refined and stylistically distinct variant of Simca’s open-top offering. The vehicle was designed by Giovanni Michelotti, who at the time was closely associated with Bertone and responsible for several key designs that defined the coachbuilder’s aesthetic direction during the 1950s and 1960s. The Simca Lido was officially introduced at the 1959 Turin Auto Salon, where it was presented as a premium alternative to the standard Simca Océane. While retaining the mechanical underpinnings of the production model—including a front-mounted inline-four engine, rear-wheel drive, and modest performance appropriate for a compact touring car—the Lido distinguished itself through its custom bodywork and elevated finish. Michelotti’s design emphasized clean lines, balanced proportions, and restrained chrome detailing. The vehicle featured a low beltline, prominent rear haunches, and a wide front grille integrated into a more sculpted front fascia. The interior appointments were also refined relative to the production Océane, with a focus on comfort and style, aligning with the car’s positioning as a coachbuilt luxury cabriolet. Production numbers of the Simca Lido were extremely limited, and it was intended primarily as a showpiece for Bertone’s capabilities rather than as a volume-production vehicle. Its construction reflected the transitional period in postwar European automotive design when collaborations between national manufacturers and Italian carrozzerie were frequent and influential. The Simca Lido remains a significant example of Franco-Italian automotive cooperation. It represents a convergence of French engineering and Italian coachbuilding at a time when European manufacturers were experimenting with new forms of industrial and aesthetic expression. The vehicle’s rarity and historical context make it a noteworthy entry in both Simca’s and Bertone’s respective design legacies.
