01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Renault T900, also known as Project 900, was an experimental concept car developed in 1961 through a collaboration between Renault and the Italian coachbuilder Ghia. Designed by Sergio Sartorelli, the T900 exemplified a bold vision of automotive innovation at a time when both manufacturers and designers were exploring unconventional ideas in packaging, architecture, and aesthetics. Visually, the T900 departed sharply from traditional sedan forms. It featured a cab-forward design, with a short, sloped front and a large glasshouse that extended over the front axle. The bodywork was smooth and aerodynamic, emphasizing horizontality and visual lightness. One of the most distinctive elements was its reverse cab proportions: the rear section was bulkier, housing the engine, while the front remained minimalistic. This configuration earned the car a reputation as a “backwards” design, not in function, but in appearance. Under the sculpted body, the Renault T900 was powered by a 1.7-liter V8 engine mounted at the rear. This engine was ingeniously created by combining two inline-four engines from the Renault Dauphine. The resulting unit delivered around 80 horsepower and contributed to the vehicle’s unusual weight distribution. The drivetrain layout—rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive—reflected Renault’s mechanical philosophy at the time and echoed the setup of its smaller production cars. The T900’s construction was forward-thinking. It employed glued aluminum body panels, an advanced approach that reduced weight and hinted at possible future production techniques. The use of lightweight materials, combined with compact mechanicals and an emphasis on interior space, pointed to a reimagining of family transport with improved efficiency and comfort. Although the T900 never moved beyond the prototype stage, it was a reflection of Renault’s willingness to investigate radical ideas during the early 1960s. The car did not go into production, likely due to its unconventional aesthetics and technical complexity. However, it remains a noteworthy exercise in design and engineering, embodying the experimental spirit of the era. The Renault T900 stands today as a rare and ambitious concept that explored the outer limits of mid-century automotive thought.
